Cyclone Runners Look to Big 12 Championships

The Iowa State cross country teams compete at the 2024 Big 12 Championships on Friday in Waco, Texas. The No. 4 Cyclone men will compete against two other top 5 squads in No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 2 BYU while the ISU women will also run against a loaded field with four top-20 teams.

Last Time Out

The No. 4 Iowa State men ran to a runner-up finish at the Wisconsin Pre-National meet two weeks ago. Robin Kwemoi Bera led the charge with a fifth-place individual finish while all five scorers finished in the top 50. 2023 All-Big 12 and All-Midwest Region runner Said Mechaal was second for ISU and 19^th overall while 2023 All-American Sanele Masondo finished third for the Cyclones and 24^th overall.

The women finished 29^th overall, racing against 20 top-30 teams. Maelle Porcher led the way for ISU with her third top 25 finish of the season. The junior enters the 2024 Big 12 Championships after earning All-Conference honors last season.

The Field at the Big 12 Championships

The No. 4 Iowa State men are joined by ranked opponents in No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 BYU, No. 24 Colorado and No. 30 Texas Tech.

On the women's side, the Cyclone women will battle with several top 30 teams, including No. 1 BYU, No. 4 West Virginia, No. 6 Utah and No. 18 Oklahoma State.

What to Watch For

The Iowa State men will battle with fellow top 5 teams in No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 2 BYU. The Cyclones have not run against the Cowboys this season and finished runners-up to BYU at Nuttycombe.
2023 All-American Sanele Masondo did not run at Nuttycombe but had a strong showing in his season debut at Pre-Nationals, supporting Robin Kwemoi Bera and Said Mechaal as the top-three individual finishers for ISU.
Maelle Porcher has been a steady presence atop the Cyclone women's lineup since she made her Iowa State debut last August, claiming top 25 finishes this season at Nuttycombe and Pre-Nationals on the Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
Porcher leads a young group gaining great experience running against some of the nation's top talent.
