LAS VEGAS – Iowa State (5-3) swept its competition on the second day of the UNLV Desert Classic, dispatching of both UC Santa Barbara (1-7) and Bradley (0-3).
Iowa State used a sixth-inning rally against UCSB and a seventh-inning rally against Bradley to come from behind in both contests and win.
Angelina Allen had a monster day, notching seven RBI on five hits with three homers.
ISU 11, UCSB 9
Iowa State started the second day of the UNLV Desert Classic in dramatic fashion, overcoming a five-run deficit to defeat the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos 11-9 in come-from-behind fashion. Of ISU's four wins, three have featured late-inning heroics to overcome early deficits – including both games against the Gauchos.
Angelina Allen had three hits and three RBI against UCSB, launching her first homer of the season. Ashley Minor and Olivia Wardlow also had multi-hit games for the Cyclones while Milyasia Ochoa joined Allen with a multi-RBI outing.
Four pitchers saw action for the Cyclones, as the game was bookended by a pair of freshmen. Aziza Rodriguez started the game, going 2.1 innings and Lauren Schurman ended the game, pitching 3.0 innings and striking out three.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first, Iowa State got on the board first in the top of the second. Thanks to a UCSB error and a pair of singles, the Cyclones loaded the bases with one out. Milaysia Ochoa came to the plate and sent a deep foul ball down the left field line which UCSB would secure for the out but allowed a Cyclone run to come across.
UC Santa Barbara struck back in the bottom of the third inning, exploding for six runs. ISU had three errors in the bottom of the frame, and four Gaucho singles did the damage to make it a 6-1 lead.
The Cyclones battled back in the top of the fourth, plating three runs. A Tiana Poole walk followed by an Olivia Wardlow single put runners on first and second. Ochoa came back to the plate and sent a grounder into right field to plate Poole and make it 6-2. Immediately following Ochoa, Angelina Allen went first-pitch hunting and blasted a two-bagger into left-center to score both Wardlow and Ochoa, making it a two-run game. That was it for the Cyclones in the fourth, as an inning-ending double play snuffed out the Cyclone rally.
A Gaucho walk in the bottom of the fourth led way to a home run, as Ainsley Waddell belted her first homer of the season to extend UCSB's lead back to four, 8-4, heading into the fifth.
ISU got a pair back in the fifth, as the inning started with a HBP and a pair of walks to load the bases with no outs. Pinch hitting, Paige Nakashima looped a single into left field to score one and keep the bases juiced for Tiana Poole. Poole hit into a fielder's choice which kept a run from scoring and the bases loaded. An RBI groundout from Wardlow would plate one final run in the frame to make it 6-8 in favor of UCSB.
Flipping to the bottom of the frame, UC Santa Barbara added another to make it 6-9.
Iowa State got a spark in the top of the sixth, as Allen led the inning off with a homer run to left center, her first of the season. Back-to-back doubles (from Spelhaug and Minor) followed, bringing in another run. Alesia Ranches then smacked a double of her own, moving Minor to third. Ashley would score on the following at-bat, as Marin hit a sac fly to CF, tying the game at nine apiece. With Ranches on second following the sac fly, McKenna Andrews laced a single into right field to score Alesia and give the Cyclones a 10-9 lead – its first since the second inning.
Lauren Schurman held serve in the bottom of the sixth as the game shifted to the seventh inning. A leadoff hit by pitch, single and walk loaded the bases for ISU. Ranches then drew a walk and brought in a run to make it 11-9.
Schurman again held serve in the bottom of the seventh, not allowing the Gauchos to get any momentum and earning her first collegiate win.

ISU 10, Bradley 7
Iowa State defeated Bradley in its second game of the day, again using a late-inning rally to claim victory. Down 7-6 in the seventh inning, Iowa State used a four-run seventh inning to pull ahead and sweep the day.
Angelina Allen had a monster performance, accruing two homers on the afternoon and tallying four RBI. Camille Marin and Olivia Wardlow also had multiple hits in the game. Tiana Poole matched Allen's four RBI and also had a three-run shot.
Saya Swain picked up her third win of the early season, striking out five. Lauren Schurman got her first career start and struck out two.
How it Happened
Iowa State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Ochoa smacked a leadoff single and Allen drew a walk to put two on. A Spelhaug fly out advanced the runners to second and third. Ashley Minor then grounded out but it was just deep enough that Ochoa was able to score from third to give the Cyclones a one-run lead.
The Braves loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, bringing one across on a walk and a second across on a sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead after one.
After ISU left the bases loaded in the top of the second, Bradley tacked on another run in the bottom half of the inning. Tori Meyer cranked her first homer of the season – a solo shot – to push Bradley's lead to 3-1.
The Cyclones surged ahead in the third thanks to a three-run bomb. Minor was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Ranches drew a walk to put two on. With a 1-1 count, Poole clobbered a ball out to left-center to give ISU a 4-3 lead. Poole's homer was her first of the season.
Iowa State handled the Braves in the bottom of the third, not allowing any runs and then notched another score in the fourth. Angelina Allen, who already had a home run in the previous game, blasted one to the left field wall. The ball would take a funky bounce, thus allowing her to round them all and score an inside-the-park home run – the first by an ISU player since 2017 – to make it 5-3 in favor of the Cyclones.
A pair of Bradley hits and a Cyclone error helped the Braves put two on the board in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game up at five apiece.
Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth before ISU broke the stalemate in the sixth. With runners on second and third, Minor hit a sacrifice fly to right field to put ISU back in the lead.
BU responded in the bottom of the inning, using a Cyclone error to score two and go up by one.
Iowa State needed a run to tie things up and extend the game in the seventh and they got that and then some. Ranches led the inning off with a double and Marin followed it up with a single to get runners on the corners. Poole would groundout but bring one in to leave a runner on second and tie the game at seven apiece. With two outs and runners on the corners, Allen stepped up to the plate and belted her third home run of the day to give the Cyclones a three-run lead.
Swain shut down the Braves in the bottom of the inning as ISU held on for its fifth win of the season.
