CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Iowa State (7-5) was in control for the majority of Saturday morning's game, before a rampant seventh inning powered Delaware (7-4) to an 7-6 walk-off win.
The Cyclones led 6-1 heading into the seventh inning, as freshman Lauren Schurman was spinning a gem in the circle. The first year from Delaware had allowed just one run on two hits through six full innings. She went into the sixth and got the first two batters to ground out and fly out before the Blue Hens went on a two-out hitting streak.
Angelina Allen had another monster game for the Cyclones, as the junior went 3-for-3 at the plate, also drawing a walk. Allen drove in a run and also scored a pair. Milaysia Ochoa matched Allen with three hits of her own, also scoring a pair of runs.
Ashley Minor had three RBI, with all three coming off a homer that just cleared the left field wall. Alesia Ranches also had multiple RBI on the morning, driving in two with a first-inning double that went all the way to the right center field wall. Ranches played in her 200th game as a Cyclone on the day.
Schurman went the distance for the Cyclones, pitching 6.2 innings.
Delaware saw seven different players record a hit, with Gianna Costrato leading the way with three RBI. Delaware scored five of its runs on a pair of homers in the bottom of the seventh.
How it Happened
The Cyclones got on the board in the first inning, using an error and a single to get runners on. The pair would advance on a flyout and eventually be driven in by Ranches who smoked a double to the wall to put ISU up 2-0.
Delaware responded swiftly in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with just one out. A Blue Hen line out to left would serve as a sac fly to bring in a score and make it a 2-1 ballgame.
Pitchers controlled the next two innings, as neither team was able to get much going.
Iowa State tacked on another run in the top of the fourth, stringing back-to-back-to-back singles together to plate its fourth run of the fame. The first two singles, from Ochoa and Olivia Wardlow, were both infield singles while Allen belted hers up the middle.
A scoreless fifth inning led to the sixth, where both Ochoa and Allen reached base to bring up Minor. Minor then cranked her second homer of the season, belting one just over the left field fence to give Iowa State a 6-1 lead. Delaware was unable to get a hit or run in the sixth.
ISU was unable to do anything at the plate in the top of the seventh, so the game went to the bottom. Schurman looked well on her way to a complete game two-hitter, as she got the first two Blue Hens to ground out and fly out.
Following the first two outs, Delaware showed some serious resolve, stringing together multiple two-out hits. One of those hits was a game-tying three-run bomb as UD was down to its last strike.
After tying it up, the next Blue Hen, Julia Boyet, smoked a ball over the right field fence to earn a walk-off victory for Delaware.
