TULSA, Okla. – The Iowa State softball team (9-14, 0-3 Big 12) fell in Tulsa on Tuesday night to the Golden Hurricane (16-7, 3-0 AAC) by a score of 1-5. Offensive issues again plagued the Cyclones, as ISU has scored two or fewer runs in the last four games.
Iowa State was limited to just three hits on the night for the second-straight game as just two Cyclones recorded hits on the evening.
Carli Spelhaug led the team with a pair of hits while Alesia Ranches had a double to her name. Milaysia Ochoa was held off the base path for the first time this season, snapping a 22-game reached base streak. ISU slugger Angelina Allen was held hitless for just the fifth time on the year.
Aziza Rodriguez started her sixth game of the season, while Lauren Schurman made her 14th appearance coming in in relief. Schurman allowed just one run across 3.1 innings of relief action.
Six different Golden Hurricane players tallied a hit while Tulsa also garnered seven free passes via walks (5) and HBP (2).
How it Happened
Despite striking out and flying out to start the game, Iowa State was able to load the bases thanks to a Ranches double, an Ashley Minor HBP and a Tiana Poole walk. The Golden Hurricane escaped the jam, forcing an ISU pop-up to escape the first frame unharmed.
Tulsa's Maura Moore struck out the ISU side in the second to give way to the bottom of the inning. TU's first two batters grounded out and popped out, respectively, before a HBP and walk put two on. A Tulsa single into right then brought home the runner from second to give the Golden Hurricane a 1-0 lead.
The Cyclones went three-up, three-down again in the third, as Tulsa took to the plate. A slick, heads-up double play from Ashley Minor gave ISU two early outs with no one on. TU then drew a walk and was hit by a pitch to put a pair on. Golden Hurricane second baseman Abby Jones then stepped up to the plate and drove one over the center field wall to make it 4-0 in favor of the home team.
The Cyclones earned just their second hit of the game in the fourth, but that was it at the plate. Tulsa was able to add a run in the inning, thanks to an RBI single from Claira Skaggs to make it 5-0.
Neither team would score in the fifth or sixth, as the Cyclones had their last chance in the top of the seventh. Carli Spelhaug led the inning off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a groundout. Freshman Isabelle Nosan drove Spelhaug in with an RBI groundout but that was it for ISU, as it fell on the road, 1-5.
