FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Iowa State (9-10) dropped Sunday's Colorado Classic finale to the Colorado State Rams (12-8), 6-9. The Cyclones now turn their attention to Big 12 play which will begin next weekend in Norman, Okla.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the game but a pair of Ram homers across the third and fourth inning powered CSU past ISU.
Angelina Allen had another major outing for the Cyclones, as the junior went 3-4 on the day with a double and her eighth homer of the season. Three other Cyclones recorded a hit on the day. One of those hits came from Tiana Poole who drove in three with a bases-clearing double in the first. Carli Spelhaug drove in a pair while Allen drove in herself with her solo shot.
Three different Cyclones took the circle, as Karlie Charles got the start. Charles struck out three, allowing three runs on six hits. Aziza Rodriguez (2-2) relieved Charles and Lauren Schurman would finish the game.
Colorado State finished the weekend undefeated in the tournament, rattling off five straight wins after coming into the tournament on a five-game losing streak.
How it Happened
Sunday's game started much differently than Friday's pair of contests against CSU, as the Cyclones jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
Allen got the inning started with a single to center. Ashley Minor was next up, drawing a five-pitch walk. Spelhaug stepped into the batter's box and belted a single up the middle to plate Allen and give the Cyclones an early 1-0 lead. Sophie Maras followed Spelhaug, drawing a second walk of the inning to load the bases. In the seventh spot, Poole loaded the count before smacking a two-out, bases-clearing double into left center to give the Cyclones a 4-0 lead before the inning ended.
After holding the Rams scoreless in the first, the Cyclones came back to bat in the second and promptly loaded the bases. With the bases juiced and two outs, Spelhaug drew the team's fifth walk of the day to make it 5-0 and earn her second RBI of the day.
CSU finally got on the board in the fourth, plating three runs. A walk and a single put two runners on before Hailey Smith belted a homer to trim the ISU lead to two, 3-5.
The Cyclones were held scoreless in the top of the fourth before the Rams' offense exploded in the bottom of the frame.
Colorado State loaded the bases with no outs, setting the stage for Peyton Allen who cranked her first homer of the season, a grand slam, to give the Rams a 7-5 lead. A sac fly and an RBI single later in the inning would push the lead to 9-5.
Neither side crossed the plate in the fifth, but the Cyclones got one back in the sixth. Allen belted her eighth homer of the season and fourth of the weekend, a solo shot, to trim the CSU lead to three, 6-9.
The Rams went to the top of the seventh needing three outs to end the game, and were able to retire the Cyclones in order to claim their 12th victory of the season.
