Kicking Off
Out to its best start since 2016, Iowa State will look to continue its August momentum into September as it heads to Memphis to face off with the top ten Tigers. The Cyclones will look to claim their first ever win over the Tigers and first ever over a top eight team.
Iowa State enters Sunday's contest after having the week off. In their last match, the Cyclones blitzed UNI, downing the Panthers 6-1. It was just the 16th time in 533 outings that ISU scored six or more goals in a game. Coach Matt Fannon earned his 100th career win in convincing fashion.
Memphis also had the week, having last played in a 2-1 road win over Ole Miss. The Tigers, ranked as high as sixth in the TopDrawer Soccer Poll, are undefeated and look to again be one of the best teams in the country. In fact, over the last seven seasons, Memphis has the tenth most wins of any program.
From the Notebook
Leading the Cyclones
Following last Sunday's offensive onslaught, the Cyclone offense is fairly balanced across the board. Senior Magdalena Keck leads the team in points, holding a pair of goals while also toting a team-high three assists. Fellow senior Morgan Furmaniak leads the squad in goals with three, having scored in three of four matches this season.
Senior Hannah Shaw is the third and final Cyclone with multiple goals on the year, as the Tulsa, Okla., native notched a brace against UNI by scoring her first ever collegiate goals. Defenders Ella Zimmerman, Isabella Agrusso and Chloe Broughton all also have goals to their names, along with midfielder Seulgi Lee.
Avery Gillahan has been the primary keeper this season in the net for the Cyclones, having played 340 minutes. Gilly tallied her fourth career shutout and first of the season against Western Illinois in the season opener. She currently has nine saves.
Opponent Outlook
Memphis came into this week having knocked off SEC opponents on the road in back-to-back weeks. The Tigers have a top-20 scoring offense, averaging three goals per contest. Memphis also averages eight points per contest.
Ashley Henderson and Ai Kitagawa lead the team in points, as each has six through three games. Henderson has two goals to go along with a team-high two assists. Kitagawa has a team-high three goals, accounting for all six points. Kitagawa has won the first two AAC Freshman of the Week honors.
Speaking of AAC Player of the Week honors, Memphis keeper Kaylie Bierman was named the Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday. She has allowed just one goal this season, which came on a penalty kick.
Series History
Iowa State and Memphis will be meeting for the fifth time this weekend. The teams have played every year (excluding 2020's COVID-impacted season) since 2019. Across those four meetings, the Tigers have outscored ISU 11-1 and have not allowed a goal in the two matches in Memphis.
Up Next
The Cyclones will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 5, when they welcome the Michigan Wolverines to the Cyclone Soccer Complex. Iowa State will look to take the lead in a series tied one game apiece as the two teams are set to kick off at 6 p.m. and, as always, admission to the CSC is free.
