SALT LAKE CITY – In the two teams' first-ever meeting, Iowa State and Utah battled to a draw on Thursday night at Ute Field.
The Cyclones (3-5-3, 1-1-1 Big 12) went toe-to-toe with conference newcomer Utah, securing its second clean sheet of conference play in just three matches. The last time ISU had two road shutouts in Big 12 play was 2016 when it blanked both Baylor and Oklahoma State 1-0. The Utes (4-4-3, 1-2-1) rebounded from a pair of road losses to secure a point at home.
Magdalena Keck led Iowa State's aggression on the night, as the senior had three shots to lead the team. In her return to her home state, Yira Yoggerst was the only other Cyclone to record multiple shots with two. Avery Gillahan secured her third shutout of the season, tallying four saves along the way. Ella Zimmerman, Isabella Agrusso, Lauren Hernandez and Adelaide Wolfe played the full 90 minutes in the field.
Katie Callaway led the Utes on offense, registering three shots and putting one on net. The Cyclones did a good job of taking away the most prolific scorer in the conference, allowing Taliana Kaufusi to take just one shot. Utah's keeper, Kasey Wardle, had two saves on the evening.
Both teams notched ten shots on the night, with four of Utah's coming on the goal while ISU placed two on. Iowa State held the save advantage 4-2, while Utah had more corners (6-2) and fouls (14-10).
How it Happened
Iowa State tested Utah early in the match, as Keck had an early run and Jordyn Herrera registered a shot within the first three minutes of play.
In what was a low-shot first half of play, both teams found themselves in multiple stretches where possession kept trading sides as neither team was able to string together any momentum.
The Cyclones were able to get a few free kick set pieces off late in the first half, but were unable to convert, as the Ute defense stood strong and kept ISU out of the net.
At the break, ISU held a 6-4 shot advantage as well as a 2-1 save edge. ISU applied considerably more pressure in the stanza, snagging four corner kick opportunities while Utah had zero.
The pay of the match was made early in the second half, as a Utah free kick from just wide of the box just ricocheted off of Gillahan but was cleared away by Morgan Furmaniak who kept the match scoreless.

The two sides continued to test the other side, and Iowa State almost broke through in the middle of the second half. Off a Yoggerst corner kick, a ball bounced around and eventually found Broughton who put one in the back corner of the net. The officials would wave it off though, citing an ISU penalty in the box and waiving off a potential game-winner.
Iowa State and Utah continued to battle through the end, though neither side was able to break the 0-0 stalemate and that's how the night ended – with both teams leaving with a point.
Fannon's Thoughts
"This was a Big 12 match that showed the quality that our league has. I'm so proud of our women for taking another step forward and putting in a gutsy performance on the road."
