PROVO, Utah – Iowa State was denied its third-straight road match with points, falling to the BYU Cougars at South Field on Monday evening, 3-1.
After a road win at Kansas and a draw in Salt Lake City, the Cyclones (3-6-3, 1-2-1 Big 12) were unable to keep their road points streak alive as they fell in a physical Monday night tilt. The Cougars (5-4-3, 3-1-1 Big 12) used two second half scores to pull away from ISU as they closed out a three-match home streak.
Lauren McConnell was the lone goal scorer for the Cyclones on the evening, as the senior had a beauty of a score in the 42nd minute of action, rifling a ball from the right side of the box into the top left corner of the net. Both Isabella Agrusso and Jordyn Herrera collected assists on the score. Morgan Furmaniak had a team-high two shots, while keeper Avery Gillahan had a trio of saves. Chloe Broughton and Adelaide Wolfe were the only Cyclones to play the full 90 in the field.
Three different Cougars found the back of the net on the evening, as BYU pulled above .500 for the first time since starting the season 1-0. The Cougars scored three goals for the first time all season on the evening, breaking what it called the "two-goal curse."Â Allie Fryer paced the team with one goal on five shots, while Mika Krommenhoek had two assists and three shots. BYU's keeper, Lynette Hernaez, allowed one goal and made one save.
BYU held a 16-7 shot advantage as well as a 6-2 shots on goal edge. Iowa State had three saves to BYU's one and both teams piled up fouls, ISU with 16 and BYU with 17, while each team collected three yellow cards. The Cougars held a 9-6 corner advantage in the contest as well.
How it Happened
In the two schools' second-ever meeting, both sides were slow to start as the match was physical early. Through 20 minutes, BYU had just four shots to pair with four fouls. The Cyclones appeared to be getting under BYU's skin so to speak, but the Cougars responded emphatically in the 21st minute with a Fryer goal to break the ice.
It wouldn't be for another 15 minutes until either side saw another shot, as both side's defense was causing problems. After a handball went against the Cougars in the early 42nd minute, the ball was fed up the field from Agrusso to Herrera to McConnell. From there, McConnell dribbled up the right side of the pitch, eventually scoring and tying the game at one apiece.
The two teams would go into the break tied, with BYU holding a 7-2 shot advantage and 6-2 corner advantage while the Cyclones held a 3-0 save lead.
The physicality ratcheted up to another level in the second half, as all six yellows were distributed in the second stanza of play, including two in the first ten minutes.
After ISU's second yellow card of the second half in the 69th minute, BYU collected its second score seconds later and pushed its lead to 2-1.
The Cougars would add insurance in the 75th minute before going on to win 3-1.
The Cyclones had a couple great looks down the stretch, including a Magdalena Keck shot off the right post and a Furmaniak breakaway that was saved, but they were unable to add a tally to the scoreboard.
Fannon's Thoughts
"Tonight was why the Big 12 is so tough. We've fought so hard and created the chances to take something away with us from this game, but we need to capitalize on our moments in the league in the right games. As long as we continue to play with such fight, we will keep moving forward."
