AMES, Iowa – Iowa State fell to Northern Colorado on a sunny Sunday Senior Day at the Cyclone Soccer Complex, 1-0,
The Cyclones (2-3-2) were shut out for the first time this season despite holding the advantage in shots, corner kicks, and saves. Northern Colorado (1-7) earned its first win of the season, netting its third score of the year.
Morgan Furmaniak led the team in shots, posting a game-high of four. Magdalena Keck had three shots, the second-most on the team, with all three coming on goal. Avery Gillahan notched a season-high of seven saves on the afternoon. Defenders Isabella Agrusso and Ella Zimmerman played the entire match, as did midfielder Lauren Hernandez.
Northern Colorado's Anneliese Wong played the hero, as she netted the game-winning goal in the 40th minute of play, stealing an ISU backline pass and sneaking one in. Lexi Tuite and Rachel Mortensen led the team in shots with three apiece, while Kaya Lindberg had six saves.
Iowa State honored eight seniors on the afternoon: Sadie Baich, Morgan Furmaniak, Magdalena Keck, Leia Khairy, Seulgi Lee, Lauren McConnell, Hannah Shaw and Yira Yoggerst.
Iowa State held the shot advantage, 15-12, posting 12 shots alone in the second stanza. ISU also had the corner advantage (6-2) and the edge in saves (7-6). Northern Colorado doubles up ISU's foul count, 18-9.
How it Happened
It was a slow start to the game, as each team spent the majority of the first half testing the other side, slowly moving into the attacking third and being methodical with their attempts.
Northern Colorado was the aggressor in the first half, attempting six shots to Iowa State's three. The Bears continued to test the ISU defense late into the stanza, eventually capitalizing on a slow-rolling backline pass from the Cyclones.
Anneliese Wong was able to snake in front of an ISU defender, picking off the pass and sneaking it past Gillahan to go up 1-0. That's where the score would stand at the break, as ISU went into the half down for just the second time this year.
The message was received at the break for the Cyclones, as they came out looking completely different on offense. ISU found itself dictating tempo and aggression for pretty much the entire second half.
The offensive aggression resulted in a lot of good looks for the Cyclones, but they were unable to punch through, as the Bears completed the shutout and won 1-0.
Fannon's Thoughts
"We've just got to be better. Though we played a much better second half, we dug ourselves a hole in the first. Our passes need to be quicker, and they will be going forward."
