WACO, Texas – In its first of two Texas contests this week, Iowa State (4-4-2, 1-3-0 Big 12) was shut out for the second consecutive match as it fell to No. 20 Baylor (8-1-2, 3-1-0 Big 12) by a score of 3-0 Thursday evening.
After winning three straight, ISU has now lost three straight as it opened October with a road setback. For the second time in the last three contests, an opposing team had an athlete record multiple scores as Callie Conrad had a first-half brace for the Bears. A second-half score in the 72nd minute made it 3-0, as the Bears claimed their third-straight win.
Taylor Spitzer led the Cyclones in shots on the night, as the senior registered three attempts, placing one on target. Off the bench, freshman Sophie Forrester notched two shots, placing one on goal. In the net, Kasey Cannistraro recorded her second-highest save output with eight, all coming in the second half.
For the Bears, Conrad had a game-high two goals, coming on three shots. Baylor midfielder Olivia Hess attempted a game-high six shots and placed five on target. Alysiah Lockette scored Baylor's third goal, making her only shot of the night count. Preseason All-Big 12 Team member Tyler Isgrig finished with four shots on the night.
Baylor held a 16-10 shot advantage on the evening, while ISU recorded more saves (8-3). The Bears attempted five more corner kicks (7-2) and committed more fouls than ISU (9-6).
How it Happened
Thursday's game featured a methodical first stanza, as each team was slow to start on the offensive side. Much of the first ten minutes featured each team trading possessions and possessing the ball in their own back third.
Baylor took the game's first attempt, an off-target shot, in the 13th minute. In the 18th, ISU saw its first shot get blocked before Baylor brought it down the other way and started to go to work. A Baylor possession in the attacking third lasted about two minutes and ended with a Bear goal by Conrad in the 21st minute to put BU on top, 1-0.
Over the next ten minutes, ISU saw a pair of good attempts get saved and just miss as they remained down one. In the 34th minute, though, Baylor added insurance, as Conrad poked in another to earn a brace and put the Bears up, 2-0.
At the break, Baylor held the edge in shots (5-4) while the teams were tied with one corner kick apiece.
The Bears picked up the offensive intensity in the second half, more than doubling their shot output. Cannistraro was able to ward off most attempts, but a shot in the 72nd minute crept through and made it 3-0 in favor of the Bears.
Fannon's Thoughts
"We've played really well regularly this season, and today we just weren't quite on it. This happens and we're disappointed, but we know the best thing is that we don't have any time to stew on it. Onwards and upwards."
