CYCLONES vs. COUGARS
Iowa State and BYU are meeting for the sixth time overall and third in Ames. Saturday's contest will be the first meeting in Ames since 1974.
BYU (61) and ISU (52, tied with Texas Tech) have the most defensive takeaways among Big 12 teams since the start of 2023.
Last time they met...Â
ISU won the only meeting between the schools as Big 12 Conference foes, beating the Cougars 45-13 in 2023 in Provo, Utah. The Cyclones jumped all over BYU in that game, intercepting a pass on the game's first play, scoring a TD three plays later and then recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. ISU was up 10-0 less than four minutes into the contest.Â
Abu Sama III finished with 110 yards and two TDs for his first career 100-yard game, while Rocco Becht completed 15-of-23 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, LB Will McLaughlin and DB Jamison Patton had interceptions in the 2023 game, while LB Caleb Bacon forced a fumble that was recovered by DB Drew Surges.

WELCOME HOME
Iowa State celebrates its 112th homecoming this week. Thousands of Cyclone alumni will return to Ames for Saturday's football game, including a pair of former NFL Cyclones AJ Klein ('12) and David Montgomery ('25).
Klein, whose NFL career spanned more than a decade, will be inducted into the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame Friday night. Klein played for Iowa State from 2009-12 and was a two-time First Team All-Big 12 linebacker (2011, '12) and was the 2011 Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year.Â
Montgomery, largely credited with shifting the culture within Iowa State football, played three seasons as a Cyclone from 2016-18 before embarking upon a still-ongoing NFL career. He returned to complete his bachelor's degree in spring 2025.

BECHT vs. BACHMEIER
Football fans will get to see two of the Big 12's best quarterbacks duke it out Saturday in Iowa State's Rocco Becht and BYU's freshman QB Bear Bachmeier.
While both Becht and Bachmeier can sling the rock, both pose a danger with their legs. Together, they are two of six QBs nationally with nine passing TDs and at least seven rushing scores this season.
Iowa State is never out of a game with Becht under center. He has led the Cyclones on seven career game-winning drives in the fourth quarter of games when ISU was tied or trailing. Three times in Becht's career he has helped ISU score the game-winning points in the final minute.
Meanwhile, Bachmeier has yet to be beat and is 7-0 in the first seven starts of his career.
AIR B&B
Iowa State tight ends Benjamin Brahmer and Gabe Burkle have been a formidable duo in the Cyclone offensive attack, which routinely rolls out 12, 13 and sometimes 14 personnel.
Brahmer is ISU's leading pass catcher with 24 receptions for 242 yards and three touchdowns, all of which have surpassed his totals from last season. He also has two 2-point conversion receptions, which don't count in his season totals.
Burkle has a reception in 13-straight games and has 17 catches for 222 yards and one touchdown this season. In his last 13 games, Burkle has 39 receptions for 505 yards and two touchdowns.

STORYLINES
SCOUTING BYU
BYU, the last remaining undefeated team in the Big 12, is one of the most well-rounded teams in the league once again this season. The Cougars love to run the ball and average 232.9 yards per game, a top-10 mark nationally. The offense is led by freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier, the team's second-leading rusher, who has thrown for eight touchdowns and rushed for nine more. His favorite target when throwing the ball is Chase Roberts, who is averaging 19.3 yards per reception. Running back LJ Martin leads the Big 12 with 774 rushing yards and four touchdowns, averaging 6.1 yards per carry.
Defensively, the Cougars allow opposing offenses less than 300 yards per game, a top-20 mark nationally. Jack Kelly is averaging nearly a sack per game (0.83), which ranks No. 13 in the country.
