PHOENIX, Ariz. – Iowa State (6-7) wrapped up the Sun Devil Classic Sunday afternoon, falling to the third-ranked Florida Gators (18-1) by a score of 24-3.
Florida's offense proved to be too much, as the Gators recorded 22 hits on the day, with eight of them going for extra bases. Four Florida athletes had at least three hits on the day, with Kendra Falby leading the way with a game-high four.
Iowa State's offense totaled seven hits on Florida, scoring three runs. All three runs came against UF's starter, Olivia Miller, who hadn't given up a run prior to the day. Freshman Jessie Clemons was responsible for all three Cyclone runs, as she blasted a three-run shot in the bottom of the first inning. Both Angelina Allen and Clemons led the team in hits with two, while Sereniti Trice, Sydney Malott and Isabelle Nosan each collected one.
In the circle, Lauren Schurman (2-4) started for the Cyclones. Jaiden Ralston, Aziza Rodriguez and Sami Potvin all also saw time for ISU.
For Florida, Miller (2-0) got the start, allowing three runs on five hits. Ava Brown would relieve Miller and pitch the final two frames, allowing two hits.
How it Happened
For the first time this weekend, Iowa State took the field to begin the contest. Florida started the day at the plate and showed early why it's ranked number three. In the first frame, the Gators plated nine to take an early 9-0 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, ISU trimmed into the lead, putting itself on the board. Both Trice and Allen led off the bottom of the inning with singles to put two on with no outs. Stepping into the box, Clemons smashed her second homer of the season over the left centerfield fence to make it 9-3.
The Gators would add 15 more runs across the final four innings to total 24 runs and go on to win the game by 21.
