ORLANDO, Fla. – Iowa State (14-14, 4-2 Big 12) completed a series sweep of UCF (20-14-1, 3-6 Big 12) Saturday afternoon, besting the Knights by a score of 1-0.
ISU's 3-0 weekend marked the team's first Big 12 road sweep since 2019 (at Kansas) and first sweep in general since 2021 (vs. Kansas). Iowa State's 4-2 start to Big 12 play ties the program record for best six-game conference start (2002).
In what was a continual theme all weekend, pitching dominated the Saturday finale. In total, Iowa State scored just six runs this weekend but will walk away with a sweep over the league's fifth-place team.
Iowa State scored in the first inning for the second-consecutive outing and that was all that was needed, as the combination of both Lauren Schurman and Abby Huhn (3-1) easily handled the Knight bats as they allowed no runs on seven hits, stranding eight UCF runners.
At the plate for the Cyclones, Sereniti Trice had one of the team's two hits and the team's lone run. Angelina Allen collected the game's lone RBI – a groundout – in the first to score Trice. McKenna Andrews had ISU's second hit, roping a single into left field. ISU was held without an extra-base hit and didn't earn a base on balls.
UCF's top-of-the order combination of Samantha Rey and Izzy Mertes accounted for four of the team's eight hits, but the Knights were unable to cash in runners on the bases as they were shut out for the second time in the series. Knight pitcher Yessenia Lopez (2-6) went the distance, fanning five and allowing just two hits, but the run in the first proved costly.
How it HappenedFor the third game in a row, Trice led off with a single, giving the Cyclones some early juice. Jessie Clemons then executed a perfect sacrifice bunt, which brought in the third baseman, and with heads-up running, Trice was able to advance to third as no one was covering. With one out, Allen sent a rocket toward the first baseman who knocked it down and recovered for the putout, but Trice was able to come across and score to give ISU the 1-0 lead.
UCF put a pair on in the bottom of the first but a flyout and groundout ended the threat.
A double in the second was moved to third on a sac bunt by the Knights, but the runner was again stranded as UCF fouled out down the right line.
The Knights threatened again in the third, as the first two batters reached on singles, but three consecutive outs once again spoiled UCF's opportunity.
Neither side had a hit in the fourth or fifth inning, but ISU then notched its second hit of the game – and first since the top of the first inning – in the sixth. Andrews smacked a one-out single into left but was eventually called out for leaving early on a steal attempt, ending the frame.
UCF had one last chance in the seventh, as a two-out double spelled hope, only to see a groundout by the following batter end the contest.
