LITCHFIELD PARK, Arizona - Zach May tallied five birdies in his final seven holes to help him shoot ten under-par and secure his first tournament victory of his career at the Bell Bank "Pay It Forward" Collegiate. May shot six under-par (66) in the final round, tying his lowest round of his career, and his 54-hole score of 206 is the lowest of his career. Iowa State trailed #49 ranked Marquette by sixteen strokes entering play today, but the Cyclones shot the second-lowest round as a team in school history, carding a 268 (-20) to complete the comeback and win by two strokes, their third team victory of the season. The Cyclones shot an 837 (-27) through their three rounds, tying the seventh-lowest 54-hole score as a team in program history.
May held the third-lowest Par 3 score (2.72) and the fourth-lowest Par 5 score (4.42) throughout the tournament. The junior from Christchurch, New Zealand totaled the most birdies in the entire field, carding fifteen birdies to help him pass the 200 birdie-mark in his career. Paul Beauvy secured his second Top-3 finish this season, tying for third (-7) after shooting five under-par (67) in the third round, the second-lowest third round score in the tournament behind May. Beauvy carded seven birdies in the final round and fourteen birdies in total, the fourth-most in the field.
Owen Sawyer shot his lowest round of the season and tied his second-lowest round of his career today by carding a 67 in the final round. Sawyer became the third Cyclone to finish in the Top-10, jumping up fifteen spots to tie for seventh (-5), his third Top-10 finish of the season. The sophomore scored his third eagle of the season and his seventh of his career today to go along with eleven birdies throughout the tournament. Luke Gutschewski just missed out on the Top-10, finishing in a tie for twelfth (-4), his fourth Top-20 finish of the season. Gutschewski rattled off five birdies in his last six holes to help him card a 68 (-4), tying his third-lowest round of the year. The senior carded thirteen birdies and one eagle across the three rounds.Â
Dianchao Wu tied his lowest round of the year, tied his second-lowest round of his career, and tied his best finish of his career by shooting a 69 (-3) in the final round to move up seventeen spots to a tie for 24th (E). Wu tied his second-lowest 54-hole score (216) of his career and racked up four birdies in his final nine holes to finish with twelve birdies in the tournament. Luke Metcalf played as an individual, and placed in a tie for 44th (+5). Metcalf carded nine birdies these last two days.Â
Iowa State as a team held the lowest Par 3 score (3.08), the lowest Par 4 score (3.95), and the most birdies in the field with 65.
The Cyclones will look to keep things rolling next week, where they will compete in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Maricopa, Arizona, where Gutschewski finished second and the Cyclones finished third in last years tournament. The two day event will start on Monday, March 31st and conclude on Tuesday, April 1st.
