HOUSTON, Texas – Iowa State (10-11, 1-2 Big 12) fell to Houston (16-7, 2-1 Big 12) in Sunday's series finale at Cougar Softball Stadium, 3-2.
In the lowest-scoring outing of the weekend, Iowa State and Houston went into the final frame tied at two runs apiece. With two outs and a pair on, Cougar first baseman Brooke Wells singled into center to secure the series for the Coogs via walk-off.
The Cyclones were again plagued by leaving runners on base, as they stranded nine on the afternoon. ISU was limited to four hits by the three-Cougar staff, as Sydney Malott was the only Cyclone with multiple hits.
Malott had one of Iowa State's two RBI, as she blasted her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot, in the fifth inning. Sereniti Trice and Ashley Minor had the team's other two hits, with Trice notching ISU's second RBI via bases-loaded walk in the fourth.
Abby Huhn got the start for the Cyclones, as the rookie pitcher went 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Across the weekend, Huhn appeared in all three contests, pitching a team-high 10.1 innings and earning a 2.03 ERA. Lauren Schurman (4-6) relieved Huhn and pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing just one run on three hits.
Three Cougars recorded two hits on the day, with Wells accounting for two of the team's three RBI. Catcher Isabel Cintron drew three walks, a game-high, and also threw out Trice as it was her first time caught stealing in her career. Wells got the start for the Coogs in the circle before ending things in the seventh.
How it Happened
The two sides would combine for just two hits in the first two frames, as the game turned to the third inning, scoreless.
ISU left one on in the third, before Houston would go on to plate the first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the frame. A one-out single would eventually move to third for the Coogs before being driven in by a ball that just stayed fair down the left line.
The Cyclones wasted little time evening the score as they tied it up in the top of the fourth. A pair of walks from Reagan Bartholomew and Tatum Johnson and a single from Ashley Minor would load the bases with two outs for ISU. Houston would then walk Sereniti Trice on four straight pitches to bring in the game-tying run.
In the bottom of the fifth, Houston retook the lead to go up 2-1. The Cougars would place runners on second and third with just one out as Kayley Prudhomme stepped into the box. She laid down a perfect bunt that just stayed fair on the right line to bring home a run. Schurman would then escape the runners on the corners jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
With one out in the sixth, Malott tied things up with one swing of the bat. Down 0-2, Malott crushed a ball over the center field fence to tie the game back up at two apiece.
ISU was close to taking a one-run lead in the sixth, as Tiana Poole hit the ball as far as one could without it leaving the park, flying out to center.
Iowa State threatened in the top of the seventh, placing its first two batters on. A fielder's choice and two pop-ups later, Houston escaped the jam and sent it to the bottom of the inning.
In the bottom of the frame, with two outs, Houston notched a single and drew a walk to put a pair on the path. Brooke Wells stepped into the box and poked one into center field, scoring the runner from second and securing the series win via walk-off.
