CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Iowa State (26-19, 11-7 Big 12) picked up its third win in the last two days as a trio of long balls helped it best in-state program UNI (26-16, 14-7 MVC) by a score of 6-2 on the road.
The Cyclones took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run shot and would add four insurance runs across the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to earn their ninth road win of the season.
Iowa State got a pair of homers from Tatum Johnson and one from McKenna Andrews as the pair combined for all six of the team's RBI in the win. Both Johnson and Andrews led the team with a pair of knocks, while six other Cyclones secured hits on the day. The trio of big flies were the only extra-base knocks for ISU, as the other seven hits were singles.
Jaiden Ralston got the start for the Cyclones, pitching three shutout innings where she allowed just two hits with three punchouts. Lauren Schurman (13-9) earned her third win in the last three days, pitching the final four frames against the Panthers.
Skylar Benesh and Kaylee Sanders led the Panthers at the plate as each notched a pair of hits on the night. Benesh reached safely in all four plate appearances, as she also drew a game-high two walks. Sanders and Addi McElrath would account for both UNI RBI. Morgan Vertz (7-5) got the start for the Panthers, allowing two runs, before three other UNI pitchers would combine to relieve her.
How it Happened
Iowa State got the scoring started in the first inning, plating a pair in the top of the frame. A one-out single from Clemons got things started for the Cyclones before Johnson stepped into the box. Johnson then sent a 1-0 pitch over the left center field fence to notch her fifth homer of the season and put ISU on top, 2-0.
Neither side was able to get anything going in the second or third, as ISU rolled its two-run lead over to the fourth. In the fourth, Angelina Allen led things off with a single to get things going. The Cyclones would eventually find themselves with runners on first and second with two outs and Andrews up to bat. In her second at-bat of the game, Andrews delivered a two-out single up the middle to plate a run and make it a three-run advantage.
After holding UNI to a fourth-consecutive scoreless frame in the fourth, Iowa State added another run in the fifth, as Johnson led off the frame with a solo shot. Johnson secured her first multi-homer game of her career with the blast, as she pushed the lead to 4-0.
The Panthers broke up the shutout in the fifth, putting a run on the board. A leadoff walk would be subsequently doubled to third as UNI put runners on the corners with no outs. A Kylee Sanders single would plate a run and trim the Cyclone lead to 4-1.
ISU plated more insurance in the sixth, marking a third consecutive inning with a run scored. Isabelle Nosan started the spark, knocking a one-out single up the middle. Next up, Andrews clocked a ball over the left field fence to secure her third homer of the season – and second in the last four games – to push the Cyclone lead to 6-1.
Going into the bottom of the seventh down five, UNI threatened a rally with back-to-back walks to start the frame. A one-out single from Moville, Iowa, native Addi McElrath would plate one, but that was as close as the Panthers got as ISU took the game, 6-2.
