AMES, Iowa – Three Cyclones had perfect days at the plate, as Iowa State (18-17, 7-5 Big 12) cruised past Kansas City (4-29, 1-8 Summit) in its first midweek contest of the season, winning by a score of 9-1 in five innings of action.
Sereniti Trice (4-4), Reagan Bartholomew (3-3) and Karlee Ford (3-3) all had stellar outings for the Cyclones, as the team notched a season-high 15 hits on the day to down the Roos. For Trice, her four hits were a career, single-game high.
Bartholomew drove in a game-best four runs, with three coming on a mammoth shot over the center field wall in the third inning. Tatum Johnson and Angelina drove in two runs apiece, with Johnson's coming on a game-ending two-RBI double. Outside of Trice, Bartholomew and Ford, Jessie Clemons was the lone other Cyclone with multiple hits (2) as she accounted for the ninth RBI of the day.
Abby Huhn got the start for the Cyclones, tossing 2.2 frames and allowing one run. She would be relieved by Lauren Schurman (9-9) who threw the final 2.1 innings of action, allowing just two hits and striking out three batters.
For Kansas City, six players notched hits, with Briona Woods accounting for the team's lone RBI of the day. Riley Bebb (1-12) got the start for the Roos, hurling two innings where she allowed seven runs on eight hits. Maddie Parker would handle the final 2.2 innings of work, allowing two runs on seven hits.
How it Happened
After a three-up, three-down first frame from the Roos, Iowa State put itself on the board first in the bottom of the frame. A Trice bunt single led things off before she eventually stole second. A groundout would move her to third before Allen lined out deep to center field, notching a sac fly and scoring Trice. Following Allen's RBI, Clemons singled to short and was driven in two pitches later by Bartholomew who doubled down the left field line as ISU took a 2-0 lead.
Neither team scored in the second, but KC got on the board in the top of the third. A leadoff walk was moved to third on a single before eventually being driven in on a two-out single from Woods to make it 2-1 in favor of ISU.
The Cyclones exploded in the flip side of the frame, putting five on the board. Trice again led off with a single before advancing to second on a passed ball. Johnson then drew a walk before Allen singled through the right side to score Trice from second and out runners on the corners. A perfect Clemons bunt would then score Johnson and again put runners in the corners for ISU. With ISU leading 4-1, Bartholomew blasted a home run over the center field wall to push the Cyclone lead to six. ISU would eventually strand the bases loaded to end the frame.
After a scoreless fourth, ISU ended things in the fifth as Johnson had a game-winning two-RBI single. A Ford double would eventually move to third on a wild pitch before another Trice single moved to second on a stolen base. Then, with two in scoring position and two outs, Johnson delivered the game-winning hit up the middle to end things.
