OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Iowa State (31-23) was unable to advance to its first ever Big 12 Tournament Championship Friday evening, falling to No. 12 Arizona by a score of 6-3.
Iowa State will await its postseason fate on Sunday, May 11, with the selection show taking place at 6 pm CT. Should ISU hear its name called, it would compete in the team's third-ever NCAA postseason appearance. If not, ISU's season would be over.
The Cyclones took both a two-run lead in the second and a one-run lead in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to hold off the potent Wildcat offense. No. 12 Arizona got what would prove to be a game-winning, three-run home run from Sydney Stewart in the bottom of the fifth to pull away.
In what was potentially her final game as a Cyclone, Angelina Allen delivered in a big way, going 3-3 at the plate with a home run. Leading the team in RBI was freshman Karlee Ford who, like Allen, had a home run on the day. The two combined to account for five of the team's six hits with Jessie Clemons owning the sixth. Tiana Poole drew a game-high two walks.
Lauren Schurman got the start for the Cyclones, handling the first three frames and allowing two runs on four hits. Yesterday's hero, Jaiden Ralston (12-10), would relieve Schurman and handle the final three innings. Ralston ended up allowing three earned runs on four hits.
Arizona's Devyn Netz and Sydney Stewart each had two hits on the afternoon, leading the team. Stewart had a game-high three RBI, all coming on her home run, while Netz chipped in two of her own. Netz (22-5) also earned the win for the Wildcats as she pitched 5.2 innings and fanned three.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first, ISU put the first runs on the board in the second. Allen led off with a single through the right side to put the Cyclones in business. A batter later, Ford walloped a one-out ball over the left field fence to plate Allen and give the Cyclones a two-run advantage.
The Wildcats belted a one-out single in the bottom of the frame, but a smooth 5-4-3 double play from Andrews to Trice to Malott ended the inning.
ISU went three-up, three-down in the top of the third before turning things over to the Wildcat bats. With two outs, Arizona drew a hit by pitch before rattling off back-to-back infield singles to load the bases and bring up Big 12 Player of the Year Devyn Netz. Netz delivered, smacking a single into center to plate a pair.
With the game tied action shifted to the fourth, where Allen put the Cyclones back in front. Leading off the inning, she belted the fourth ball she saw over the left center fence, a solo shot, to put ISU back in front, 3-2.
Arizona again had the counterpunch, tying things up in the bottom half. A leadoff double from Kaiah Altmeyer was able to move to third on an ISU error to give the Wildcats a runner in scoring position. With one out, a fly ball to center field would be just deep enough to allow Altmeyer to score from third and knot things up.
The Cyclones stranded a single in the fifth before the Wildcats came back to the bats and took their first lead of the game. A leadoff walk was eventually moved to second on a single to put Arizona in business. With one out, Sydney Stweart just cleared the left field fence, plating three, to give the Wildcats a 6-3 lead.
ISU got a leadoff single from Allen in the sixth, but an out later and an inning-ending double play snuffed out any potential sixth inning rally.
With ISU trailing by three heading into the seventh, the Cyclones got a pair of one-out walks. ISU was unable to push the runs across though, as it went on to fall by three runs in the Big 12 semifinals.
