DES MOINES, Iowa – Entering the match undefeated, Iowa State (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) suffered its first setback of the season as it lost at Drake (1-2, 0-0 MVC) by a score of 2-0 Thursday evening at Mediacom Stadium.
ISU hadn't allowed a goal through two games and the Bulldogs hadn't scored through two games, but the script was flipped on Thursday. Drake got on the board early in the first, converting its first shot, before adding a second goal in the back half of the opening stanza.
Five Cyclones had shots on the evening, with four of them coming on net. Maia Soulis, Danica Lunceford and Erin Hopewell played the full 90 minutes on a steamy night in the state capital. In the net, Eme McClenahan allowed her first goals of her collegiate career.
For Drake, Angela Gutierrez and Alexa Aylward had scores, with both Izzy Snowden and Zoey Mahoney logging assists. Isabella Balsley led all players with two shots. Bulldog keeper Addie Ford registered four saves as part of her first clean sheet of the year.
Drake outshot ISU, 8-5, but ISU put more of its attempts (4-2) on goal. Drake's only shots on net were its two goals. The Bulldogs had four saves to ISU's zero, while the Cyclones held the corner kick edge, 6-5.
How it Happened
Drake struck first, scoring its first goal of the season in the eighth minute off the right foot of Gutierrez. The score came off a feed from Emmerich and became the first goal ISU allowed through three games.
After some physical back-and-forth which featured a quartet of fouls, the next shot came off the foot of Emmerich in the 24th minute, flying off target. The Bulldogs would continue to apply pressure, seeing another shot fly wide in the 32nd minute.
The Bulldogs broke through a second time at 37:07, as Aylward collected a carom in front of the net and snook it past the feet of McClenahan to give Drake a two-goal cushion. ISU's first shot of the half came in the 42nd minute, but Mia Sowders' attempt was saved by Ford.
At the half, Drake held a 5-1 edge in shots and had defensively was controlling the flow of the game.
Out of the break, ISU had a pair of attempts, seeing an Izzy Kapanke shot saved before Drake stymied a corner set piece.
Iowa State's last three shots all came I the final 15 minutes, with a pair being saved and the third going awry.
Drake would go on to secure its first win of the year, 2-0.
