LAWRENCE, Kan. - Eric Vann rushed for 126 yards on 15 carries and scored a touchdown and Jason Harris blocked a pair of punts that led to second-quarter scores as Kansas held on for a 34-24 Big 12 Conference victory over Iowa State.
Kansas (5-4, 3-3 Big 12) defeated Iowa State for the seventh consecutive time. With the loss, the Cyclones -- who last beat the Jayhawks in 1989 -- dropped to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Iowa State actually outgained Kansas, 490-355. The Cyclones were led by Darren Davis, who rushed for a career-high 261 yards on 42 carries, and Todd Bandhauer, who completed 20-of-39 passes for 274 yards and three TDs.
With the game tied 3-3, Vann ripped off a 64-yard run to move the ball deep into Iowa State territory. That set up his one-yard touchdown, giving the Jayhawks a 10-3 lead with 59 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Harris' first blocked punt was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by Dustin Curry, giving the Jayhawks a 17-3 advantage just 12 seconds into the second quarter. His second block was grabbed by Michael Allen in the end zone with just 36 seconds left in the first half, increasing the lead to 27-3.
The Jayhawks extended it to 34-3 with 11:10 remaining in the third quarter when Zac Wegner tossed a 46-yard scoring pass to Termaine Fulton.
The Cyclones scored three times in the final quarter to make things interesting. Bandauer threw TD passes of 43 yards to Daman Green, 11 yards to Gerrick Bivins and nine yards to Ed Williams following an onside kick that was recovered in the final minute.
