WACO, Texas - The Iowa State softball team defeated Baylor, 3-2 today in Waco, Texas. Freshman Adi Blackmon was 2-of-3 at the plate with one RBI.
The Cyclones attacked early scoring two runs in the first. Lisa Frank reached on a throwing error by Bears catcher, Ryan Stukel, and advanced to third on the error. Frank scored on a fielder's choice by Blackmon. Blackmon advanced to second when Jessica Polo grounded out to third. Blackmon scored on a Robyn Riedler RBI single to make it, 2-0.
Baylor was scoreless until the bottom of the third. Stacey Hundley was hit by the pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice hit by Vanessa VandeBurgt. Naomi Fitzgerald walked and a wild pitch advanced Fitzgerald to second and Hundley to third. Sarah Sharp walked to load the bases. Cyclone hurler Mandy Loushin walked Sarah Caudle to bring in Hundley making it, 2-1
The Bears tied the game in the fourth as Kelly Flemming singled up the middle and scored on a RBI double by Stukel to make it, 2-2.
Iowa State took the lead back in the fifth inning. Blackmon reached on an error by the shortstop. Blackmon stole second and scored on a Polo RBI single.
Polo was 1-of-2 with one RBI, Frank also contributed a hit. Woodward native Jen Bice picked up the win for the Cyclones, allowing one run on two hits. Freshman Erica Martinez got the save allowing no runs, on two hits and striking out two.
Iowa State is 12-9 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12. The Cyclones continue play on March 28 when they play host to Missouri in a doubleheader that starts at 2 p.m.
