AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team fell to Texas in a Big 12 doubleheader in Ames today. The Longhorns shut out the Cyclones, 6-0 and took the night cap, 2-1. Sophomore Amberly Lessenger was 1-of-1 at the plate with one RBI in the second game.
Texas took an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first. Lindsay Gardner started off the inning with a single. Gardner stole second and advanced to third on a single by Audrey Hendricks. A Keely Franks RBI single scored Gardner. Hendricks scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Marlo Hanks to make it, 2-0.
The Longhorns scored four more runs in the top of the sixth. Cyclone hurler Erica Martinez walked Autumn Eastes to start out the inning. Eastes stole second and advanced to third when pinch hitter Courtney Ryan reached on an error by Iowa State third baseman Michelle Junod. A RBI single by Gardner scored Eastes making it, 3-0. A RBI double by Cathie Johnson expanded the lead to four. Jodi Reeves singled to left center to score Johnson and Gardner, to make it a 6-0 ballgame.
Kimi Yoshizawa was 1-of-2 at the plate, Cinnamon Gooding also contributed a hit. Mandy Loushin took the loss for the Cyclones, allowing two runs on eight hits, while fanning two. Martinez allowed four runs on four hits, striking out two.
Iowa State took an early, 1-0 lead in the second inning of the night cap. Senior Robyn Riedler doubled and scored on a RBI single by Lessenger.
Jen Bice and the Cyclones held Texas scoreless until the top of the seventh inning. Reeves singled down the right field line and scored on a two run homer by Kathleen Richter making it a 2-0 ballgame. Robyn Riedler was 1-of-3, while Lisa Frank, Adi Blackmon and Junod each contributed a hit. Bice recorded the loss for the Cyclones, allowing two runs on four hits, while fanning eight.
Iowa State returns to action on Tuesday, April 18 when they travel to Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers. The single game is set to begin at 4:30.
