AMES, Iowa - Cyclone senior Michelle Junod went 2-of-3 at the plate as Iowa State defeated Texas Tech, 6-1 Sunday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The win improved the Cyclones record to 17-26 overall and 4-12 in the Big 12.
Iowa State got on the board first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. Laura Browning reached on an error by Texas Tech second baseman, Eva Harshman. A Lisa Frank RBI single scored Browning to give ISU a 1-0 lead. Jessica Polo singled to left field scoring Frank to give Iowa State a 2-0 edge. Polo advanced to second on a Kimi Yoshizawa sacrifice hit. Robyn Riedler singled advancing Polo to third. Polo stole home to give the Cyclones a 3-0 lead.
Iowa State expanded the lead scoring three more runs in the bottom of the third. Junod singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amberly Lessenger. A Cinnamon Gooding single advanced Junod to third. Laura Browning singled to score Junod to make it, 4-0. Pinch runner Tiffany Cornine scored on a Frank fielder's choice to give ISU a 5-0 lead. Browning scored on an Amanda Renfro wild pitch to give the Cyclones a 6-0 edge.
The Red Raiders lone run came in the top of the seventh. Paula Workman homered to left center to put Texas Tech on the board. The homer was Workman's second of the series.
Riedler and Junod were 2-of-3 at the plate respectively, while Lisa Frank went 1-of-3 with two RBI's. Polo was 1-of-3 with one RBI and Laura Browning went 1-of-3 at the plate with one RBI. Senior hurler Mandy Loushin (2-7) pitched her third complete game of the season, allowing one run on three hits, while fanning seven.
Iowa State returns to action on 1 p.m. Sunday, May 7 when they play host to Nebraska at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The game will be the last regular season game for Cyclone seniors Frank, Gooding, Junod, Loushin, Polo and Riedler.
