AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team fell to Texas A&M, 8-4 today at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The Cyclones are 15-14 overall and 3-6 in the Big 12 Conference.
The Aggies got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Angie Shelter singled and advanced to second on an error by Cyclone centerfielder Lisa Frank. Shelter scored on an RBI single by Angie Long to make it, 1-0.
Iowa State bounced back scoring one run in the bottom of the third. Jill Hlavacek doubled and scored on a double by Frank to tie the game.
Texas A&M scored again in the top of the fourth when Selena Collins doubled and scored on a Lisa Klam double to take a 2-1 lead.
The Cyclones got the lead back in the bottom of the fourth scoring two runs on one hit. Adi Blackmon reached on an error and stole second. Michelle Junod reached on an error by Aggie third baseman Jennifer Davis. Junod advanced to third and Blackmon scored on the play. Robyn Riedler singled and advanced to second on an error by the second baseman as Junod scored to make it, 3-2.
Iowa State added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Riedler reached on an error and advanced on a Jessica Polo single. A Cinnamon Gooding double scored Riedler and Polo to make it, 4-2.
Aggie pinch hitter Hollee Hayden reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice hit by Shelter. Hayden scored on a RBI single by Long. Crystal Martin reached on an error and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Erica Martinez came in to pitch for Kristin Ferguson. Collins doubled to centerfield to score Martin to tie the game. A RBI single by Kelly Ferguson scored Collins to take a 5-4 lead. Lisa Klam walked and Ferguson advanced to second. Bice who started the game came back in to face A&M hitter Tiffany Esters. Esters homered to make it, 8-4.
Frank was 2-of-4 at the plate with one RBI. Gooding went 1-of-1 with one RBI, Riedler also had an RBI. Hlavacek and Polo each contributed a hit. Martinez (4-4) recorded the loss for the Cyclones, allowing three runs on two hits. Ferguson allowed two runs on four hits while striking out one in 3 1/3 innings. Bice allowed three runs on four hits while fanning three in 3 2/3 innings.
The Cyclones resume play on Sunday, April 9 when they take on Texas A&M at 1 p.m.
