POWAY, Calif. - The Iowa State softball team fell to Utah State, 5-1, and No. 9 Fresno State, 8-0, at the San Diego State tournament today.
The Aggies defeated the Cyclones in their season opener, 5-1. Utah State got on the board first scoring one run in the top of the first inning. The Aggies added another run in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead.
Iowa State answered back scoring one run in the bottom of the third. Kimi Yoshizawa led off the inning with a single to center field. Yoshizawa advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Adi Blackmon. A Kelly Wardein double scored Yoshizawa making it a 2-1 ballgame.
Utah State scored three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to make it 5-1. Wardein had two doubles and one RBI. Yoshizawa, Erica Martinez, Rainey Eanes, Lauren Cathey and Mindy Ogan each contributed a hit. Jen Bice (0-1) recorded the loss for the Cyclones allowing five runs on 10 hits, with four strike outs.
Iowa State was shut out by No. 9 Fresno State, 8-0. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the first inning. They added five more in the top of the fourth to make it 7-0. Fresno State scored one more run in the top of sixth making it, 8-0.
Sophomore Erica Martinez took the loss for Iowa State allowing seven runs on four hits, while fanning two. She lasted 3 1/3 innings. Senior Kristin Ferguson allowed one run on two hits and struck out two. Martinez had two hits, including a double. Wardein, Julia Lindsay and Mindy Ogan each contributed a hit.
The Cyclones continue play in the San Diego State tournament tomorrow, when they take on Cal State Northridge at 3 p.m. and New Mexico at 8 p.m.
