COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Iowa State softball team defeated Indiana State and shut out Tennessee-Martin Saturday at the Missouri Round Robin. The Cyclones beat the Sycamores, 4-1 and defeated the Skyhawks, 5-0.
Rainey Eanes led the Cyclone hitting attack going 3-of-3 at the plate with two RBI against Indiana State. Iowa State took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning. Eanes singled to right field and advanced to second as Kelly Wardein reached on an error by Sycamore pitcher Kim McGinley. Erica Martinez singled advancing Wardein to second and Eanes to third. A RBI single by Lauren Cathey scored Eanes to give ISU a 1-0 lead. Wardein scored on an error by Indiana State short stop Rachel Lynch.
The Sycamores scored their only run in the top of the fourth inning. Sarah Lemond singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kate Gilner. Lemond scored on an error to make it 2-1.
The Cyclones added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kimi Yoshizawa reached first base on a bunt. Pinch runner Ashley Core stole second and scored on an Eanes RBI double to give Iowa State a 3-1 edge.
Iowa State expanded their scoring one run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Laura Browning was hit by the pitch and advanced to first. Browning stole second and advanced to third on a Julia Lindsay single. Eanes sacrifice fly scored Browning to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
Cyclone hurler Kristin Ferguson (3-0) picked up the win for the Cyclones, allowing one run on one hit while fanning three. Cathey had two hits and one RBI, while Martinez had two hits. Lindsay and Yoshizawa each contributed a hit.
ISU shut out Tennessee-Martin, 5-0. The Cyclones jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the second inning. Mindy Ogan doubled to left field and scored on a Jil Hlavacek double.
Iowa State added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Cathey walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cathey scored on a Martinez double to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.
ISU expanded the lead in the bottom of the fourth scoring one run on two hits. Amberly Lessenger singled and advanced to second on a Hlavacek sacrifice bunt. Eanes singled to right field scoring Lessenger to make it a 3-0 game.
The Cyclones scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ogan led off the inning with a single. Pinch runner Adi Blackmon stole second and advanced to third on a Lessenger single. A Hlavacek sacrifice bunt scored Blackmon to give ISU a 4-0 lead. Lessenger scored on a passed ball making it a 5-0 ballgame.
Martinez recorded the win for the Cyclones, giving up five hits and fanning six batters. Hlavacek was 1-of-1 at the plate with two RBI, while Eanes and Martinez each contributed a hit and had a RBI. Lessenger had two hits and Morgan LeCluyse had one hit.
The Cyclones (7-7) continue play tomorrow at the Missouri Round Robin when they take on Tennessee-Martin at noon and Missouri at 2 p.m.
