TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Iowa State softball team shut out Florida A&M, 7-0 Wednesday, in Tallahassee, Fla. Erica Martinez had two hits, including a home run and three RBI to lead the Cyclones.
Iowa State took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Martinez singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mindy Ogan. Amberly Lessenger singled advancing Martinez to third. Lessenger stole second and advanced to third as Laura Browning singled to score Martinez. Browning stole second and Lessegner stole home to give ISU a 2-0 lead. Kimi Yoshizawa singled to score Browning to make it 3-0.
The Cyclones added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Rainey Eanes doubled to centerfield and advanced to third on an Adi Blackmon single. Martinez homered to left field to give ISU a 6-0 lead.
Iowa State expanded the lead in the top of the sixth scoring one run on three hits. Browning singled and advanced to second on a single by Julia Lindsay. Pinch hitter Jil Hlavacek singled to advance Browning to third and Lindsay to second. Eanes walked to score Browning making it a 7-0 ballgame.
Sophomore hurler Jen Bice (4-4) recorded the win for the Cyclones, giving up two hits while fanning eight. Browning had three hits and one RBI. Yoshizawa and Eanes each contributed one hit and one RBI respectively. Blackmon had two hits, while Lessenger, Lindsay and Hlavacek each contributed a hit.
The Cyclones, 9-8 overall, return to action on Thursday when they take on Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla.
