LUBBOCK, Texas - The Iowa State softball team defeated Texas Tech, 7-3 Saturday at Rocky Johnson Field to improve to 2-10 in the Big 12 and 14-24 overall. Freshman Julia Lindsay was 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBI to lead the Cyclones.
ISU scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to give Iowa State a 5-0 lead. Lauren Cathey walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a Kimi Yoshizawa single. A single by Morgan LeCluyse loaded the bases. An RBI single by Amberly Lessenger scored pinch runner Ashley Core to give Iowa State a 1-0 lead. LeCluyse and Lessenger scored on a Tech error to give ISU a 3-0 lead. Mindy Ogan and Rainey Eanes scored on a single by Lindsay to give Iowa State a 5-0 lead.
Texas Tech cut in to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring one run. A triple by Andrea Joachims scored Shauna Briggs to make it, 5-1.
The Cyclones scored another run in the top of the fifth when Yoshizawa singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by LeCluyse.
Tracey Cartier tripled down the right field line and scored on a Sandy Butler ground out to make it 6-2.
Iowa State expanded the lead in the sixth inning. Lessenger doubled to right center and advanced to third on a Eanes ground out. An RBI single by Lindsay scored Lessenger to give the Cyclones a 7-2 edge.
The Red Raiders scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning. Carmen Grindell singled and scored on a RBI single by Eva Harshman to cut the lead to 7-3.
Jen Bice (9-13) recorded the win for the Cyclones, allowing three runs on eight hits and fanning five. Yoshizawa was 3-of-3 at the plate. LeCluyse and Lessenger were 2-of-4 at the plate with one RBI respectively. Martinez had two hits, and Adi Blackmon contributed a hit.
Iowa State continues play tomorrow when they take on Texas Tech at 1 p.m. at Rocky Johnson Field.
