DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team edged instate rival Drake, 2-1 Tuesday at Buel Field. Cyclone hurler Jen Bice fanned 15 batters en route to her fifth victory of the season.
ISU got on the board first scoring one run in the top of the third inning. Mindy Ogan led off the inning with a single to left center and then a ground out by Adi Blackmon advanced Ogan to second base. Ogan scored on a single by Rainey Eanes to give Iowa State a 1-0 lead.
The Cyclones added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Erica Martinez singled down the right field line to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Ashley Core advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Cathey. Core advanced to third on a Laura Browning ground out and scored on a wild pitch making it 2-0.
The Bulldogs lone run came in the bottom of the seventh inning off a Katie Shimon home run to make it 2-1.
Bice (5-7) recorded the win for Iowa State, allowing one run on three hits while fanning 15. Martinez was 2-of-3 at the plate while Eanes was 1-of-2 with one RBI. Browning, Mindy Ogan and Kimi Yoshizawa each contributed a hit.
Iowa State, 10-16 overall, travels to Columbia, Mo., April 14 to take on Missouri for a double header starting at 2 p.m.
