AMES, Iowa - Texas A&M snapped Iowa State's five-game win streak, including four straight in conference play, downing the Cyclones 9-1 Saturday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The Cyclones got just one hit on the afternoon, that on Lindsey Herrin's sixth home run of the year. The loss drops ISU to 13-9 overall and to 4-1 in Big 12 action. TAMU starter Jessica Slataper got the win to help the Aggies improve to 1-3 in league play and to 27-8 overall.
TAMU broke a two-inning scoreless tie with a three-run third inning. The bulk of the Aggies scoring in that stanza came behind a double from Cheryl Fowler that brought in two runners. Texas A&M then extended its lead to 9-1 notching six scores in the top of the sixth. The Aggies did all their damage with just two hits, but two errors by the Cyclones proved to be extremely costly as all six run came after Iowa State should have recorded its third out.
Erica Martinez gave up just two hits on the day but eight runners came in to score as she took the loss to fall to 6-5 on the year. She worked 5 2/3 innings, striking out six but issued eight walks
The Cyclones will be back out at the Southwest Athletic Complex Sunday for the second and final game of the series vs. Texas A&M. First pitch will be at noon.
