AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State Soccer team tied Fairfield 1-1 in double overtime at the UMass Classic Sunday. The Cyclones' record moves to 3-3-1 while the Stags are now 1-5-1. Massachusetts, the tournament host, topped Iowa State 1-0 on Friday.
Fairfield's Lindsey Pulito scored her second goal of the season at the 18-minute mark. Fairfield maintained the one-goal lead the rest of the half. ISU's Nikki Gamble evened the score three minutes into the second half, notching her fourth goal of the season.
Iowa State outshot Fairfield 35-11. The 35-shot total was the most in a game by Iowa State since a 37-shot effort in a 9-1 win over Kent State on Oct. 13, 1997. The Cyclones' 35 shots Sunday is the third highest single-game total in school history. In two games at the UMass Classic, Iowa State outshot its opponents 60-23.
Katie Ely recorded 13 saves for Fairfield, and Beth Chapman stopped four shots for ISU, including three in the second overtime period.
Iowa State will open Big 12 play Friday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at Texas A&M.
