CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The Iowa State softball team defeated New Mexico, 2-1, Friday afternoon in the team's first game of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tournament. The win improved ISU's record to 10-9. ISU snapped a one-game losing streak with the win. Senior Erica Martinez was the team's winning pitcher, upping her record to 8-3. Sophomore Lindsey Herrin hit her first home run of the season to lead Iowa State.
The Cyclones scored both their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Herrin hit a home run to right field, the freshman Cary Akins hit a single to left field. Sophomore Heather McLatchie singled to the shortstop, advancing Akins to second. Then Julia Lindsey singled up the left side and drove Akins home the process. Iowa State finished the inning with two runs, four hits and no errors. New Mexico scored its lone run in the second inning.
Martinez struck out seven batters and allowed six hits. Kim Rodgers and Katie Ruby also had hits for the Cyclones. "I thought we continued to play better as the game went on," head coach Ruth Crowe said. "All and all, I'm proud of the effort the kids gave and hopefully we'll continue to play tough as the tournament goes on."
Iowa State will continue play at the 2003 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tournament by playing Western Illinois and Connecticut on Saturday, at 8:30 a.m., and 1 p.m., respectively.
