CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The Iowa State softball team lost to Western Illinois, 8-7, in extra innings on Saturday in the team's second game of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tournament. With the loss, ISU's record falls to 10-10. The Cyclones were also scheduled to play Connecticut, but the game was cancelled due to rain. Senior Erica Martinez and freshman Kristin Karanzias split time at the mound, with Karanzias picking up the loss. Sophomore Lindsey Herrin hit a three-run home run in the third inning and also added three RBI.
The Cyclones had 12 hits in the game, compared to Western Illinois' nine. ISU scored its first run in the first inning when sophomore Kim Rodgers scored off a Kelly Wardein single. The third inning was the Cyclones' inning as Herrin hit a home run that scored both Wardein and Martinez. Iowa State scored one more run in the fifth inning, one in the seventh and one in the eighth. Martinez and Karanzias combined to strike out six batters. ISU got hits from Rodgers (1), Martinez (2), Wardein (3), Herrin (3), Katie Ruby (2) and Misty Kimura (1).
Iowa State will continue play at the 2003 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tournament by playing host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m., and Minnesota at 3 p.m.
