AUSTIN, Texas -- The Iowa State softball team fell to No. 7 Texas, 7-0 Saturday afternoon in Austin. The Cyclones fell to 10-16 on the season and 0-1 in the Big 12 Conference. Senior Erica Martinez pitched five of the seven innings, with senior Jen Bice pitching one inning. Martinez, who struck out three batters, recorded the loss, her pitching record falling to 8-5. The Longhorns ace pitcher, Cat Osterman, pitched five innings and recorded seven strikeouts.
Iowa State had six hits to Texas' 10. The Longhorns got on the board in the third inning, scoring three runs on a two-run single and another single later in the inning. They scored another three runs in the fourth inning and one more in the sixth. Senior Katie Ruby led the way for the Cyclones with three at-bats and two hits. Julia Lindsey, Kelly Wardein, Martinez and Cary Akins also had hits in the Cyclone effort.
Iowa State and Texas will play again on Sunday, starting at Noon, at the Red and Charline McCombs Field in Austin.
