MACOMB, Ill. -- Junior Julia Lindsey's RBI double to left field in the top of the fourth inning gave ISU a 5-4 lead it never gave up to defeat Western Illinois, 5-4, Tuesday afternoon in Macomb, Ill. The win, which snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Cyclones, improves their record to 11-17 overall. ISU lost, 8-7, to Western Illinois earlier in the season.
Sophomore Lindsey Herrin was on the pitching mound for ISU and gave up only four hits to earn her first win of the season.
Iowa State quickly got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Herrin and a Katie Ruby RBI single. But Western Illinois got on track fast by scoring four quick runs on four hits. The Cyclones evened the score in the top of the third inning when Herrin hit a home run to right field and scoring Kim Rodgers from first base. It was Herrin's fourth home run of the season. Lindsey hit a RBI double in the fourth inning to give ISU the win.
Herrin led the way for the Cyclones at the plate with one hit, one run and three RBI, including the homerun. Lindsey went one-for-one at the plate, along with a run and a RBI. Junior Ashley Core had two hits and one run and Ruby had one hit and one RBI.
Iowa State will take on intrastate rival Drake on Thursday, March 27, starting at 4 p.m., at Drake's Buel Field.
