TUCSON, Ariz. - Iowa State opened the 2003 soccer season with a 2-1 victory over Arizona at the Arizona Invitational Friday. Iowa State earns its first road victory since opening the 2002 season with a 3-0 win at Air Force.
The Cyclones struck quickly, with sophomore Amy Flores scoring off an assist by redshirt freshman Kate Kirwan at the 1:27 mark. Flores' goal was the fastest season-opening score in ISU histroy. Arizona answered in the 26th minute when Candice Wilks converted a penalty kick. Iowa State broke the tie when Flores scored again less than two minutes later off an assist by senior Arlene Samuel.
Iowa State scored on two of its three shot attempts and was outshot 9-3 in the first half. Both teams took four shots in a scoreless second half. Flores, who took two shots, was the only Cyclone with more than one shot on the night.
ISU senior goalkeeper Beth Chapman recorded six saves en route to her 14th career victory, tying for second in team history. Chapman also moves into second on the all-time list with 156 career saves.
The victory over Arizona is the first win over a Pac-10 foe in ISU soccer history. The Cyclones won their second-straight season opener, and the program is 3-4-1 overall in season openers.
Weber State and Kent State tied 1-1 in the opening game of the Arizona Invitational. Iowa State (1-0) battles Weber State (0-0-1) Sunday, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m.
