TUCSON, Ariz. - The Iowa State soccer team wrapped up the Arizona Invitational title with a 1-0 win over Weber State Sunday. The Cyclones topped Arizona 2-1 Friday and open the season with two straight wins for the second consecutive season.
Against Weber State, who battled Kent State to a 1-1 tie on Friday, Iowa State held a 13-3 advantage in shots in a scoreless first half. The 13-shot output was the most in a half by ISU since firing 14 attempts in the second half against Fairfield on Sept. 22, 2002.
Iowa State struck in the 79th minute when senior Arlene Samuel scored on a free kick. Samuel has five career goals and currently ranks second among active Cyclones with 13 career points. ISU outshot Weber State 20-10 for the game, led by freshman Erin McDowell's six shots. Samuel and Amy Flores added three shots each.
Senior Beth Chapman made two saves and recorded her eighth career shutout, moving within one of ISU career leader Lynley Hilligoss. Weber State goalkeeper Melanie Stratford made nine saves, including seven in the first half.
Flores, who scored two goals in ISU's victory over Arizona, was named the Arizona Invitational Offensive MVP. Arizona's Lindsey Peeples was named the tournament's Defensive MVP.
Iowa State will host DePaul on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.
