AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to DePaul in the Cyclones' home opener Sunday. The loss drops Iowa State to 2-1 overall in 2003 while the Blue Demons, winners of their last three contests, move to 3-1. DePaul is 2-1 all-time against ISU.
DePaul held a narrow 8-7 edge in shots in a physical first half that remained scoreless until the final moments. In the 43rd minute, DePaul's Lauren Spacht collected a loose ball and found Julianne Sitch in front of the net. Sitch collected her fifth goal in four games this season.
Despite a 10-7 edge in shots in the second half, Iowa State was unable to strike. DePaul grabbed a two-goal advantage 10 minutes into the half when Spacht scored off an assist from Amanda Marier. The Cyclones held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks in the second half. Iowa State took eight corners in the game, the most by ISU since taking eight in a 4-3 win over Baylor on October 25, 2002.
"We really took it to them in the second half," ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "We played with some spark and created some opportunities."
Iowa State outshot DePaul 17-15, becoming the first team to outshoot the Blue Demons this season. The Cyclones were led offensively by sophomore forward Kristina Baumann, who took six shots on the day. Redshirt freshman Kate Kirwan added a career-high four shots.
"Kate Kirwan played an exceptional game," Hornbacher said. "She made a lot of opportunities coming out of the midfield."
DePaul goalkeeper Lindsey Deason recorded nine saves en route to the shutout victory.
Iowa State will travel to Madison, Wis., to face Big Ten foes Wisconsin and Michigan in the Wisconsin Invitational, Sept. 12 and 14.
