Iowa State Powers Past Drake, 6-3

AMES, Iowa ? Senior Julia Lindsey had two hits and two runs and junior Kim Rogers added a run and two RBI to help lead Iowa State to a 6-3 win over Drake on Thursday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The win, which snapped a three-game losing streak for the Cyclones, improved ISU's record to 11-25 overall. Drake falls to 24-19 overall. Freshman Alyssa Ransom was on the mound for the Cyclones and struck out six Drake batters. She improved her record to 8-14.

The game was scoreless until the Cyclones got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Misty Kimura drove in ISU's first run when she hit a single to center field and ended up on third base, scoring Ashley Killeen and Julia Lindsey. Drake added a run in the top of the fourth inning when pinch runner Lexie Rose scored off an error by Cyclone second baseman Jennifer Bigbee. ISU added another run in the bottom of the inning when Rogers scored off an error by the Drake first baseman. The two teams took a 3-3 tie going into the fifth inning.

In the fifth inning, Drake scored two runs off a Lindsay Larry home run and jumped out to a 5-3 lead. But the Cyclones answered right back when Rogers hit a single to left field, scoring Heather McLatchie and Lindsey. Kimura added a third run when freshman Katie Reichling hit a single to the short stop. Iowa State led 6-3, after five innings. But neither team could add anymore runs and the Cyclones won the game, 6-3.

Iowa State had eight hits and only one error, compared to Drake's seven hits and four errors.

“I feel good about today,” head coach Ruth Crowe said. “We did a better job of attacking and hitting the ball. We got some great offense today. It was a good win against a really good team. I thought Alyssa pitched a very good game.”

Iowa State will travel to Waco, Texas, to take on conference foe Baylor on Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25. Saturday's game will begin at 2 p.m. and Sunday's game will start at 12:30 p.m.
