AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to nonconference foe Arizona in the 2004 season opener for both squads. The game was the first game of the 2004 Cyclone Classic. The Cyclones fall to 0-1 on the young season, while Arizona evens the all-time series with Iowa State, 1-1. Junior Kristina Baumann and sophomore Jess Villhauer had three shots each, while freshman goalkeeper Jo Haig had eight saves.
Arizona started fast early with two shots right away. Haig collected her first collegiate save two minutes into the game. After shots by Villhauer, Baumann and sophomore Kate Kirwan and two corner kicks by Arizona, the Wildcats' Candice Wilks scored off an assist by Nicole Scheid. Arizona led, 1-0, at the 13:57 mark. ISU's offense stalled after that and didn't register a shot the rest of the half. But the Cyclones played solid defense with Haig having four of her eight saves in the first half.
In the second half, Iowa State came out aggressive with a shot by Villhauer right away. Amy Flores, Kirwan and freshman Renee de St. Aubin all added shots, but they did not generate to goals as Iowa State fell to Arizona, 1-0.
"Overall I thought we played with a lot of heart," head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "Offensively, he had a lot of ideas and we made some changes at halftime, but we just weren't able to complete the final pass to give us the opportunity to score. I thought Jo played fantastic. She was very solid and came up huge for us with big saves. But there are a lot of positive things that came out of tonight. We just need to continue to attack and play better in all aspects of the game."
The Cyclones will take on Drake on Sunday night starting at 7 p.m., at the ISU Soccer Complex.
