LUBBOCK, Texas - The Iowa State women's soccer team controlled its conference opener from start to finish Friday, defeating Texas Tech 6-2, at R.P Fuller Stadium. The six-goal output was the most for a Cyclone team in a Big 12 conference game since the program's inception back in 1996. ISU has now won five of their last six games, improving its record to 6-2-2.
"It was great to see us capitalize on most of our chances tonight," head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "Most of our shots hit within the framework and it is great to get a win to start off conference play. It was just a solid overall team effort and we really gained some confidence by scoring a lot tonight."
Iowa State got on the board early and often, taking the lead in the 11th minute on a goal from sophomore Stephanie Kaphingst. Junior Kate Kirwan picked up her first assist of the season on Kaphingst's second goal of the season.
The Cyclone flurry continued as sophomore Erin Witte connected twice within a minute to put Iowa State up 3-0 at the 21-minute mark. Senior Amy Flores collected her first assist on the year, feeding Witte with her first score.
Texas Tech was able to cut the lead to 3-1 just before half, but ISU continued the offensive assault in the second period, getting two more goals from Leslie Hill and another from Amy Flores to put the game out of reach. Senior Kristina Baumann notched her first point of the season, assisting Hill's first goal in the 59th minute. Both Hill and Flores are now second on the team in goals scored with three.
