AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State soccer team (6-5-3, 2-3-1 Big 12) played No. 3 Texas A&M (12-2-1, 6-1-0 Big 12) hard for 90 minutes, but was defeated, 1-0, Friday night at ISU Soccer Complex.
“Despite the loss, I'm extremely pleased with my team's overall performance,” said ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “I thought we created some very dangerous opportunities and we really put them on their heels.”
The difference in the game was an ISU missed clearance atop the 18-yard box that gave Melissa Garey a one-on-one opportunity against Cyclone goalkeeper Ann Gleason in the 18th minute. Garey deposited the ball into the top left corner past a charging Gleason. The play developed off a long A&M clearance from the Cyclone offensive zone.
The Cyclones created some quality opportunities the rest of the way, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Aggies' Kristin Arnold (
A field player was also credited with a save for ISU, stopping one shot in a flurry of three. The team save was sandwiched between two shots off the post in the final minute of the opening half.
Texas A&M outshot the Cyclones, 24-10, including a 12-7 difference in shots on goal, while also holding a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
“To be able to put the No. 3 team in the country on their heels and keep on coming at them and actually have a lot of great chances late in the game just shows that our team is not going to quit, they're not back down to anyone, and I like that quality in our team right now,” said Hornbacher. “I'm really excited moving forward, coaching this team, because I think we're going to do some great things this season.”
