AMES, Iowa ? Alyssa Ransom tossed a complete game and allowed just one run to lift Iowa State to a 2-1 win over South Dakota State in the first game of Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader at the Southwest Athletics Complex.
The Cyclones improved to 21-30 overall, while
The Cyclones took the lead in the third inning on a pair of groundouts by Courtney Wray and Alex Johnson, which scored pinch runner Kelsey Kidwell and right fielder Kristy Olsen. Kidwell pinch ran for Jessica Quade, who roped a single through the left side to start the rally.
It looked like the Jackrabbits were going to knot things up in the sixth inning but a terrific running over-the-shoulder catch by Iowa State centerfielder Fallon Johnson ended the threat, stranding a runner at third.
Ransom (9-11), who struck out four, allowed a hit to lead off the seventh inning but SDSU's Brittany Postma bunted and was called out as the ball touched her out of the batter's box. Ransom then got Samantha Heinzman to pop out to shortstop and Wray alertly tossed the ball to Quade after first for the game ending double play.
Kristen Karanzias joined Quade and Olsen as the only Cyclones with hits.
Kuhl and Teresa Howell each went 2-for-3 to lead the Jackrabbits at the plate.
