MONROE, La. ? Iowa State freshman pitcher Rachel Zabriskie tossed her second no-hitter in three career starts as the Cyclones held on to beat Louisiana-Monroe, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the Mardi Gras Classic.
Zabriskie (3-1), a freshman from Austin, Texas, no-hit UW-Green Bay in the season opener last weekend and followed that performance with a complete game no-hitter against the Redhawks (3-4) Sunday. Zabriskie, who struck out a career-high 10, had just two blemishes on her final line, hitting the leadoff batter in the second inning and allowing a walk with two down in the seventh inning.
The Cyclones (6-1) struggled to get anything going offensively against ULM pitcher Lindsay Rittenhouse. ISU scrapped together just two hits through three innings as Rittenhouse kept the Cyclones off the board.
Iowa State finally got to the ULM hurler in the fourth inning. Jacquelyn Beatty singled through the right side to start the inning and was pinch ran for by Carrie Monroe. A fielding error by Redhawk second baseman Melissa Rivera allowed Monroe to advance to second and Courtney Wray to reach. Sydni Jones sacrificed to advance the runners and another error by the Redhawks scored Monroe to make it 1-0.
From there it was all Zabriskie as the Cyclone pitcher cruised through the ULM lineup to pick up her third win.
The Cyclones stole five bases in the game to improve to 15-for-17 on stolen base attempts this season. ISU tied a season-low with just five hits and stranded 10 base runners in the game, but took advantage of three ULM errors.
Rittenhouse (1-3) took the loss for Louisiana-Monroe despite striking out 11.
Iowa State will be back in action Friday as it heads to the Chattanooga Challenge. The Cyclones will face Eastern Kentucky at 8:45 a.m. to open tournament play.
