TUCSON, Ariz. ? Eighth-ranked Arizona belted two home runs and Iowa State left six runners on base as the Wildcats updended the Cyclones, 7-1, on Friday night at the Hillenbrand Invitational. The loss snapped Iowa State's eight-game winning streak and leaves the Cyclones at 11-2 on the season.
The Cyclones were able to put pressure on Arizona pitcher Lindsey Sisk (4-1) but were unable to put runs on the board as the freshman continually worked herself out of jams. Sisk finished with four strikeouts while allowing five hits over 5.2 innings of work.
Arizona (8-4) took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Brittany Lastrapes scored on a fielder's choice by Sam Banister. The Wildcats then tacked on two more run on K'Lee Arredondo's two-out homer to right center off ISU starter Charissa Carlin in the third inning.
The Cyclones missed out on a great opportunity in the bottom half of the third. Michelle Dettmer singled and Kristy Olsen doubled to put runners in scoring position with just one out. Sisk got Kelsey Kidwell to ground into a fielder's choice, which retired Dettmer at home, and Courtney Wray to foul out to third to end the threat.
After Iowa State stranded another leadoff hit in the fourth, Arredondo again came through with a two-out infield single to score Cyndi Duran and make it 3-0.
A sixth inning two-run shot by Jenae Leles, her third of the season, off reliever Amie Ford extended the Arizona lead to 5-0.
The Cyclones chased Sisk in their half of the sixth, loading the bases before Carrie Monroe earned a RBI by getting hit by a pitch. Arizona then inserted All-American Taryn Mowatt, who got Sydni Jones to strike out to end the inning.
The Wildcats would add two more runs in the seventh as Laine Roth singled to plate Arredondo, who reached on a two-out double. Roth then came in to score on Stacie Chambers only hit of the night.
Wray's sixth-inning hit ran her hitting streak to six games and Alex Johnson had a hit for the third-straight game.
Carlin (5-1) dropped her first game of the season, allowing six hits and four runs in five innings.
Iowa State will face South Florida in the late game, with first pitch coming at approximately 9 p.m. (CT).
