SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Long Beach State pitcher Brooke Turner scattered five Iowa State hits as the 25th-ranked 49ers defeated the Cyclones, 6-0, on Friday at the San Diego Classic. It marked the first time this season that ISU has been shut out after getting blanked 14 times last season.
The Cyclones (18-5) committed a pair of errors and Long Beach State capitalized, scoring four runs in the second inning. Danielle Linke tripled to score a run and Jessica Beaver doubled to drive in two in the inning.
The 49ers (16-8) would add two more in the fifth as Ashley Weber and Whitney Radcliff each drove in a run with singles to make it 6-0.
The Cyclones weren't without their own scoring opportunities as they stranded five base runners in the game.
Courtney Wray finished 2-for-2 for the Cyclones, running her hitting streak to a career-best eight games. Kelsey Kidwell also extended her hitting streak to six games with an infield single and Ariel Coburn had her second triple of the season.
Radcliff and Linke each finished with two hits and a run batted in for Long Beach State.
Rachel Zabriskie (8-2) took the loss for the Cyclones, lasting just 1.1 innings and allowing four runs on four hits in her shortest start of the season.
Turner (11-3) got the win for the 49ers, striking out five to pick up her eighth shutout.
The Cyclones will continue tournament action this afternoon when they face Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m. (CDT).
