Cyclones Fall To No. 25 San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Iowa State committed six errors that resulted in four runs as it fell to 25th-ranked San Diego State, 8-2, in the final game of the San Diego Classic on Monday afternoon.
ISU (19-8) and SDSU (23-9) were tied at 2-2 after three innings but the Aztecs scored six unanswered runs, including four in the fourth. SDSU has now won five of its last six games.
Courtney Wray hit her first home run and Alex Johnson collected a pair of hits for the Cyclones in the loss. Kelsey Kidwell and Ariel Coburn also had hits in the game.
Megan McDonald drove in a pair of runs and was one of three San Diego State players with two hits.
Charissa Carlin (7-5) took the loss for the Cyclones, lasting just 1.1 innings and giving up five hits and a run.
Brooke Petty improved to 5-0 on the season, allowing just two runs on five hits to pick up the complete-game win.
The Cyclones raced out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a fielder's choice by Johnson that plated Kelsey Kidwell. The run came after San Diego State spoiled a golden opportunity in the first. The Aztecs had the bases loaded with no outs but Carlin got a double play and a fly out to end the threat.
The Aztecs would tie it up in the second as Christine Kulick singled up the middle to score Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario, who pinch ran for McDonald after she singled to lead off the inning. Amie Ford relieved Carlin with the bases loaded and one out and got the next two batters out to keep the score tied at 1-1.
Another leadoff hit by the Aztecs, this time a double by Erin Floros in the third inning set up a run. McDonald hit a sac fly to score Katy Erickson and give the Aztecs their first lead of the game at 2-1.
Wray then tied it up with her first career homer in 273 at-bats, belting a third inning Brooke Petty delivery over the wall in right field to it at 2-2.
The tie was short-lived as San Diego State scored four in the fourth to go ahead 6-2 and then tacked on two more in the seventh for the final margin of 8-2.
Iowa State will face Creighton in a doubleheader on Tuesday at the Creighton Sports Complex at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available at Cyclones.com.
