WACO, Texas ? Kirstin Shortridge tossed her first complete game shutout of the season as 15th-ranked Baylor defeated Iowa State, 5-0, in the Big 12 opener for the Cyclones. ISU's cause was also hampered by four errors in the field.
Baylor (18-7, 1-1 Big 12) jumped out to a quick lead in the first as Courtney Oberg hit a sacrifice fly on Iowa State (19-11, 0-1) starter Amie Ford that scored Shortridge, who doubled to lead off the inning.
The Lady Bears would tack on another run in both the third and fifth innings. Oberg had another sac fly in the third and Brette Reagan's double down the left field line plated the other run and chased Ford from the game.
A sixth inning run-scoring single by Tiffany Wesley and an error by Courtney Wray that allowed Wesley to score later in the inning all but wrapped up the victory for the Bears.
The Cyclones had just four hits in the contest, with just Sydni Jones able to advance into scoring position in the game. Jones doubled with two down in the seventh inning. Amanda Bradberry, Jacquelyn Beatty and Kelsey Kidwell also had hits for ISU.
Shortridge (4-2) picked up the win for the Lady Bears, giving up just four hits while striking out two.
Ford (3-3) took the loss for Iowa State, tossing four innings and giving up three runs.
The Cyclones and Lady Bears will play again Saturday at noon.
