Ford Stops UMKC as ISU Rolls To 7-0 Win

WICHITA, Kan. ? Amie Ford tossed a complete game one-hitter and Jacquelyn Beatty drove in three runs as Iowa State rolled to a 7-0 win over UMKC in bitter cold softball action at the Shocker Invitational on Friday afternoon.

The Cyclones (15-3) braved less than ideal 28 degree temperatures at first pitch to pound out nine hits while Ford kept the Kangaroos (1-7) off balance all afternoon. Ford (2-0) tied her season-high with six strikeouts in the contest.

Beatty got back on track for ISU after struggling last weekend, going 2-for-3 and driving in a career-high three runs. Ariel Coburn finished the game 2-for-2 with three runs scored, extending her career-best hitting streak to six games.

After a scoreless first inning, ISU got things going in the second as Carrie Monroe singled to drive in Coburn. Beatty also scored on the play as UMKC left fielder Ashley Whiteside misplayed the ball to make it 2-0.

In the third, ISU tacked on three more to increase its edge to 5-0. Alex Johnson joined Coburn and Beatty with RBI singles in the inning as ISU had four hits in the inning. Courtney Wray had her fourth double of the season with two outs in the inning to start the rally.

The Cyclones rounded out the scoring in the fifth as Beatty again came through, doubling to left center to score Coburn and Sara Stinson, who walked after pinch hitting for Johnson.

UMKC's only hit came in the top of the sixth as Megan Ussary singled to left field to break up Ford's no-hit bid.

Taya Upkes (1-3) took the loss for the Kangaroos, allowing seven runs on nine hits. Upkes struck out five in the loss.

Iowa State will continue tournament action Saturday at 10 a.m. as it faces South Dakota State.
