WICHITA, Kan. ? Ariel Coburn homered twice and Kelsey Kidwell stole five bases and scored five runs as Iowa State (17-4) beat South Dakota State, 12-5, Sunday morning at the Shocker Invitational.
Coburn has four homers in the last three games and owns a nine-game hitting streak after going 3-for-5 against the Jackrabbits (4-13). Kidwell was equally impressive, going 4-for-5 with career-highs of five runs and five stolen bases. Courtney Wray and Alex Johnson rounded out the stellar individual performances for the Cyclones. Wray collected three hits and drove in a career-best four runs while Johnson drove in three runs on two hits.
Charissa Carlin (7-3) got the win for the Cyclones, allowing five runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Amie Ford picked up her first career save, tossing two innings of shutout ball.
Kiley Schwedhelm (0-2) took the loss for the Jackrabbits.
Johnson opened the scoring with a single in the first that plated Kidwell, who beat out a bunt to open the game. The Jackrabbits would get two back in their half of the first as Ashley Durazo tripled on Carlin to score a run and later came in on an illegal pitch, making it 2-1 SDSU.
Wray singled to score Kidwell and Carleigh Berry as the Cyclones regained the lead with two more runs in the top of the second to go up 3-2.
After a scoreless third inning, Wray struck again with a single and it was Kidwell who came in to score her third run and increase the ISU lead to 4-2.
The Cyclones then had a big inning, scoring five in the fifth to go up 9-2. The inning was highlighted by Coburn's two-out, two-run homer and Johnson's two-run single.
South Dakota State scored three runs in the sixth before ISU could record a single out. The Jacks had runners on second and third with no outs when Ford relieved Carlin and got the next three hitters out to halt the rally.
But ISU responded again in the top of the seventh. Coburn blasted her second homer of the game and Wray doubled to score Kidwell.
Iowa State will wrap up tournament play at 1 p.m. Sunday against Wichita State.
